In recent years, many organisations have realised the benefits of developing an in-house career coaching capability. These include:
During an economic downturn, people need to keep developing, via training, projects, secondments, shadowing and finding out more about the internal and wider job markets; there is a general need to be active in networking, developing your professional profile, and to keep abreast of new developments. Career coaching can help people achieve these aims.
It is also a way of demonstrating to employees that the organisation is concerned for them and their development, and wants to encourage them to manage in the best possible way during this downturn. Such coaching can motivate staff to take charge of their own career and personal development – and to motivate themselves.
It is expensive to lose people and to hire people. It is also expensive to use external consultants for career counselling and coaching. By creating a professionally trained in-house pool of career coaches, the organisation is putting out a strong message to staff that it is concerned to support their career development. It is also providing a significant development opportunity for the selected staff who, through their training, will role model the skills the organisation wishes to promote. By selecting coaches via open competition, it will also be demonstrated that skills traditionally considered to belong more to specialists and Human Resources staff, are in fact available in everyone. This is important in encouraging thinking about transferable skills.
