A unique five day course that offers training over two modules in
the core skills of career counselling. The various stages of career
counselling are covered on the course from contracting with clients
through to decision making and action. Participants completing the
five day course receive a Certificate of Attendance and a License
to use the CCS Self Assessment Manual. The course is based on the
key text Career Counselling by R Nathan and L Hill (2nd edition, Sage,
2005).
- Participants give and receive career counselling, based on CCS Five
Stage Model of career counselling
- Practical skills training with feedback from experienced and practicing
career counsellors
- Training in the use of two relevant questionnaires in career counselling
- Comprehensive Course Manual covers all sections of the course, OHPS,
booklists and handouts
- The CCS Self Assessment Manual provides 35 exercises, based on four
key questions:
- Who am I ?
- What do I want?
- What might help me? Stop me?
- How do I get there?
- Support whilst applying the learning between modules
- Copy of Career Counselling given to each participant
- Participants completing the training gain automatic membership
of the CCS Alumni Association, with opportunities for CPD, a Newsletter
and two learning events per year.
- The CCS License is gained by successful completion of a Case Study-based
Test. Feedback is given, and one hour's follow up supervision

By the end of the Core Skills Course, participants will:
- Have built their repertoire of skills and techniques to provide
effective career counselling
- Have designed a draft career counselling service, or be more clear
about how they can enhance their current career counselling practice,
based on sounds ethical principles and professional standards
- Be familiar with the principles of effectively using exercises in
the CCS Self Assessment Manual, by completing some of these exercises,
and receiving guidance on their use
- Know how to use two questionnaires covering the key areas of motivation,
values and needs
- Be more confident to use these tools in career counselling discussions
with staff and/or clients
- Be able to use a staged and structured model of career counselling
to support clients in addressing career related issues
- Understand the value of screening and contracting in the management
of clients' expectations of career counselling discussions
- Be aware of the importance of supervisory support and self management
- Understand the importance of evaluation and ways to achieve this
- Have experienced the process of career counselling both as a client
and a counsellor
- Have produced an Action Plan for professional and personal application.
