Testing the Water™: Is Self employment for Me?
We know that more and more people are on the brink of starting their own business. And there are also the risks which are often overlooked.
Research shows that this transition to self-employment can be made easier if some key issues are tested out and addressed. They include:
- clarity of vision
- personal competencies
- personal and financial supports
CCS runs this Workshop in conjunction with Cathy Brown of Evolve Enterprise http://www.evolve.eu.com.
Objectives
- develop a clearer understanding of whether self employment is the appropriate next step for you
- know those areas to rectify or work on to improve your chances of making a successful transition to self employment
- plan the further steps you need to take to address these areas of development
Who for?
Anyone considering their suitability for self employment. For example:
- The Workshop may form part of a range of Workshops supporting an Outplacement programme
- Students completing a Business degree (eg MBA) may be considering self employment as an option
- Women returning to the workplace
- Franchising organisations wanting to help potential franchisees thin through their suitability
- People who have been out of work for some time considering their options
Testing the Water™ Coaching questionnaire
Central to this workshop support is the Testing the Water questionnaire. Developed by Cathy in partnership with Birkbeck College, University of London over 18 months of research. It aims to help people to assess their readiness for self-employment.
The workshop has a number of steps:
Step One - Checking it Out
- after applying for the workshop, participants will have a brief conversation with one of the Workshop Facilitators prior to completing Testing the Water™
Step Two - Testing the Water
- ahead of the workshop, participants will receive the Testing the Water™ questionnaire
- typically it takes 60-90 minutes to complete
- by completing this questionnaire, participants will have made an initial assessment of their readiness for self-employment and will be aware of both their strengths and development gaps
Step Three - Providing Practical Support
- the workshop will consist of making sense of the Testing the Water™ results, and practical activities to help participants to improve their readiness to move into self-employment
- the workshop can include one-to-one coaching support both during and subsequent to the workshops
